Before you choose a martial arts school for you or your child, there are some things you will need to think about! Just because this is an extra activity does not mean that you should ignore things like the facility, the staff training, or the general approach to martial arts. Just because someone is a black belt and has won many competitions does not mean this person is a good teacher or that they know how to run a successful business. Here are some of the top things to look for when choosing a martial arts school:

The Facilities

When choosing a martial arts school, you will want to check to ensure that the space is clean and organized. If the place doesn’t appear to be professional, then the instructors probably aren’t, either. You should feel free to ask about the school’s first aid kit and their safety procedures, as injuries can happen. If they don’t have any sort of first aid kit, that should be your first indication that this is not the place for you or your child.

Instructors

Perhaps the most important part of joining a new martial arts school is finding knowledgeable and kind instructors. A good instructor will want to know what your interests are, as well as how they can help you achieve your goals. Learning from a bad teacher can cause you to miss out on some of the finer points of martial arts, and you may not like your classes because of an instructor who is not encouraging or has a rude demeanor. The best teachers are professional, courteous, and personable. When you go in for trial classes, they should give any needed attention to you or your children in order to help them feel more at ease and safer in their classes.

Feel free to ask if the instructors are CPR and first aid certified. Accidents can happen in any athletic activity, and you will want to be sure about your child’s safety.

The Vibe

Consider the overall attitude of the facility. Sometimes the owner, the instructors, or even the other students will just rub you the wrong way for whatever reason. If you find that this is the case, then trust your instincts! The right school will have positive instructors and encouraging environments that are truly passionate about your success. Keep a lookout for a place that makes you feel right at home.

Style

This has nothing to do with what you wear, but it does have everything to do with who is teaching the classes and how they teach them. Ask a few questions about what physical skills are needed for karate or whatever martial arts class you are pursuing. Those of you with heart conditions may not be so successful in cardio-based martial arts, such as taekwondo. Or, if you are interested in self-defense, make sure that is part of the curriculum. For those of you couldn’t care less about the style and are just looking to have fun, make sure the instructor is what you are looking for more so than the style.

Students

Pay attention to how many advanced and how many intermediate students are in these classes. Why? If there are, that means that the instructors know how to keep the students motivated and working hard. Keep in mind that some schools will choose to have smaller class sizes to focus better on an individual’s technique. Talk to a few of the parents and students to learn more about the program. Ask them what they like, how long they have been there, and what they have learned in order to get a better idea of whether or not this school is a good choice for you.

Price

Many martial arts studios are contract based, meaning that you will be promising to pay for a certain period of time. This is up to you! Most places will give you a trial period or class to figure out if that is the best space for you. If finances are a concern for you, ask how much classes cost before you sign up or even try the lessons. If you can’t commit to that school because of the fees, it isn’t worth testing it out.
